Afghanistan

  • Most people considered to be Afghan nationals claiming asylum in the UK are unaccompanied minors, who travelled through Europe alone.
  • It is possible for people to be deported to Afghanistan once they reach the age 17 1/2, meaning that many who come as minors to the UK spend their childhood growing up in Britain, only to be deported to Afghanistan – a country they remember little about (and therefore are in danger of) [see article links below].
  • There is a clear motive for western countries such as the UK to deny asylum to Afghan nationals, and to state that Afghanistan is “safe” enough to deport people to (despite the UK government’s own advice to British citizens travelling to Afghanistan): the UK can then contend that the ongoing 2001 war in Afghanistan is a success.
